Cohesity NetBackup 11.0: Protecting data from the cyber threats of today and tomorrow

Highlights include continued innovation in cyber resilience, cloud workloads, and AI-powered automation capabilities.

The average cost of a data breach reached $4.88 million in 2024. That’s a 10% increase over 2023—the highest since the pandemic. Cyber threats are not going away anytime soon. So, we’ve continued our innovation in data security and cyber resilience with NetBackup 11, our most powerful and secure architecture to date.

I’ve spoken to over 700 Cohesity customers in the last 30 days in person and on Zoom. Each conversation reinforced the urgent need to deliver data security to the enterprise both on-premises and in the cloud.

In this new release, we’ve expanded recent additions to the product, like our adaptive self-defense, which is unique in the market and performs advanced analytics to identify user operations that may be high risk. And we’ve also introduced new capabilities that future-proof your data against threats that don’t even exist—yet.

Securing data against current and future threats

Quantum computing is garnering a lot of attention in cybersecurity circles. As opposed to a thousand years, the University of Maryland claims that quantum computing and new algorithms can break RSA or ECC encryption within hours or even minutes – and in fact, a research team in China claims that they have already done this. AES encryption remains secure, but in a world where quantum computers become more powerful, it could be broken in a fraction of the time that standard computers would require.

That’s why NetBackup 11 introduces quantum-proof encryption, ensuring long-term data confidentiality against traditional and quantum computers. This forward-thinking approach guarantees that your data remains secure, even in the face of a “harvest now/decrypt later” strategy—where cyberattackers are betting on quantum computing are stealing your data now and are content to simply wait and decrypt it in the future.

Automating cyber resilience

Last year, we added adaptive self-defense capabilities that proactively monitor user behavior to guard against internal and external threats. This is a unique capability that only NetBackup provides. With our Adaptive Risk Engine 2.0, NetBackup monitors an expanded range of user actions, including unusual policy updates, unusual user sign-in patterns, and several other factors. Actions—such as alerts, MFA, or MPA requests, even breaking network connections and ending a user session—can then be triggered to ensure that behavior is authorized.

We also recently added a Security Risk Meter in NetBackup that helps users visualize the risk posture across their security settings, data protection, and host communication to ensure proper risk mitigation measures are in place.

With our new Security Risk Meter 2.0, we include a much larger number of settings in these risk score calculations—including the ability to automatically provision recommended values and even trigger MFA if baseline settings are altered in a suspicious manner.

Optimized for today’s cloud environments

So much intelligence is built into NetBackup 11, but it doesn’t stop at cybersecurity. We’re also building on our market-leading cloud support with improved scalability, workload support, and faster performance in public cloud environments. Lowering costs in the cloud has never been easier, with new support for cloud archive tiers such as Amazon S3 Glacier or Azure Archive, including critical DR and replication capabilities.

We’ve added support for seven new PaaS cloud workloads, for a total of 29. We’ve shortened backup windows with incremental backups on workloads like Azure PostgreSQL, and we’ve optimized metadata checks to provide significantly faster backups to cloud object storage—optimizing efficiency and ensuring that performance is not sacrificed when protecting data in the cloud.

Empowering organizations in the face of cyber threats

There’s much more to NetBackup 11, and I encourage you to contact your Cohesity representative to learn more. NetBackup was recently endorsed by Sheltered Harbor as a “validated turnkey data vaulting solution,” demonstrating that it meets the most stringent cybersecurity requirements for U.S. financial institutions and other organizations worldwide who rely on similar standards.

In an era where cyber threats are growing more sophisticated by the day, NetBackup 11 is here to help you stay one step ahead. This release isn’t just about keeping your data safe—it’s about making data protection smarter, faster, and more adaptable to your evolving needs.

Protecting your data shouldn’t feel like a constant uphill battle. With NetBackup 11, you have the tools to defend against today’s threats while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges, all with the ease and efficiency modern enterprises demand. It’s more than just an upgrade—it’s a smarter way to secure your future.

The recent combination of Cohesity and Veritas’ enterprise data protection business formed the world’s largest data protection software provider. Our combined expertise is set to redefine data security and deliver a broader, more powerful product portfolio. And we’re just getting started.
