GigaOm Radar: Cohesity three-peats as a Leader and Outperformer for Unstructured Data Management

You probably have much more unstructured data than you think. All of those user files, emails, reports, system logs, audio and video, application and machine data, and even social media posts—account for up to 90% of all enterprise data.

Two things immediately come to mind about unstructured data: First, it continues to grow exponentially faster than structured data—fueled substantially by the proliferation of machine-generated data and the prevalence of innovative IoT solutions. Second, it’s increasingly being stored for extended periods of time, if not forever.

Largely due to those two reasons, this explosively-growing data has become the lifeblood of day-to-day operations and holds tremendous potential to help organizations discover new opportunities and make smarter decisions. But, with our new global remote workforce so spread out, our applications and data are as well. This wider surface makes our data much harder to manage, protect, and analyze—not to mention more susceptible to attacks like ransomware.

Unstructured data has radically changed the way we manage data. Organizations are aggressively transitioning from storing data exclusively on-premises, to now storing it across many locations, including in the cloud and at the edge. Given this new data landscape, it becomes cumbersome (and very expensive) to know what data you have, how it’s being used, and if it puts your organization at risk for compliance or security incidents.

With so many solutions focusing on various aspects of data management, it can be overwhelming to figure out which is the ideal fit. Some solutions focus on managing data at the infrastructure level only, helping with things like tiering, lifecycle management, and basic search. But, they often fall short when it comes to solving business problems with data-contextual solutions for compliance, security, data governance, and eDiscovery.

So, what is the ideal solution for your company? Well, if there was a magic button, pressing it would yield a solution that: simplifies the management of data no matter where it’s located, lowers operational costs and spending, and gives you deep insights into your data—all while defending your business against emerging cyber threats.

The good news is that GigaOm has its finger on the pulse of this space, and they’ve just published two new reports with their reviews on the top unstructured data management solutions for both infrastructure and business workloads.

GigaOm rates Cohesity as a Leader and Outperformer, again

There are many players competing for the top spot in the unstructured data management game. With a singular solution delivering powerful data management and security capabilities, Cohesity was ranked as a Leader and Outperformer for the third time among a dozen vendors.

Data management is a pillar of what Cohesity is all about, as we strive to help our customers simplify, secure, and make the most of their most critical business asset, unstructured data. GigaOm acknowledges, “Cohesity offers a complete end-to-end solution for data protection, consolidation, and management, with a centralized user interface (UI), great overall efficiency, and total cost of ownership (TCO).” Of note, GigaOm adds, “Cohesity offers a growing list of capabilities that address both infrastructure-and business-focused applications.”

With the highest possible rating of “Exceptional”, GigaOm noted Cohesity for “Outstanding focus and execution” across the board for: Architecture, Scalability, Flexibility, Performance & Efficiency, Manageability & Ease of Use, and Ecosystem.

GigaOm writes, “Data management remains one of the key differentiators for Cohesity. In fact, it has implemented an extensive series of features in this area aimed at simplifying data mobility, protection, security, and governance. SmartFiles includes remote data replication capabilities, automated tiering between different storage systems and the cloud, transparent archiving functionality, data migration, and sophisticated ransomware protection, which benefits from Cohesity platform-level advanced security features.”

GigaOm’s comments are based on just some of the latest innovations of our data security and management platform, the Cohesity Data Cloud, described below.

The Cohesity Data Cloud

Available as self-managed software and SaaS, the Data Cloud is a unified platform with data services that help organizations radically simplify infrastructure, better understand business data, and protect and secure their data from cyber threats.

5 Pillars White

Search and analytics are big focus areas in the GigaOm reports for compliance, eDiscovery, and data reuse. These capabilities are the foundation of Cohesity Data Insights—to equip you to make informed business decisions by understanding what data is stored, who has access to it, and how it is being accessed. Cohesity’s integrated search features make it easy to perform interactive searches to quickly find the data you need.

GigaOm also analyzed vendors for their Orchestration capabilities like data migration, policy-based data movement, and data repatriation. Cohesity offers just that with Data Mobility to put your data where your business needs it—whether on-prem, at the edge, or in the cloud. This means that data is automatically tiered with powerful orchestration features and seamless access for applications and users, so data always remains available, safe, and secure.

Security was weighed heavily for GigaOm’s evaluation of things like auditing, monitoring, and detection of anomalies like ransomware. An overarching strength for Cohesity, Data Security protects your business with rapid recovery, AI-powered insights for ransomware detection, cyber vaulting, and user behavior analytics. With powerful data classification capabilities, you can quickly assess compliance and security risks, and identify sensitive and regulated data with ML-based data classification. And for that added layer of protection, you can safeguard your data to an immutable cloud vault service with Cohesity FortKnox. There are also many additional security features that further serve to keep your data safer, like multifactor authentication, quorum-based approvals, and encryption.

Manageability and Ease of Use were other important factors that GigaOm considered in the reports. Cohesity Data Access largely centers around Cohesity SmartFiles to optimize cost, scale, and efficiency for your unstructured data with unified file and object services for the hybrid cloud. Support for SMB, NFS, and S3 ensures secure access for your users, and seamless integration with your enterprise applications.

Last but not least…

Although backup and recovery is not a main theme for these particular GigaOm reports, you can’t talk about data management without considering protection. Data Protection is what Cohesity knows best, to keep all your enterprise applications and data sources safe with a multicloud platform and instant recovery at scale.

Cohesity leads the pack for unstructured data management

When it comes to exploring unstructured data management solutions, GigaOm has done all the homework for you. The GigaOm Radar Reports assess how well unstructured data management solutions are positioned to meet both infrastructure and business-focused solution requirements.
