Expanded data protection support to include Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environments
Enterprises virtualize their IT systems to gain flexibility, realize cost savings, and improve efficiency. Protecting these virtual machines is foundational for Cohesity customers. Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization is seeing tremendous growth across all verticals, and our customers asked us to add it to the list of protected data sources.
With the Cohesity Data Cloud 7.2.2 release, we are excited to announce the support of Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization environments. Customers can now more confidently secure and protect data from their OpenShift Virtualization environments with Cohesity DataProtect. For customers who’ve adopted Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization as a new/alternate hypervisor, here’s what you can expect:
- Operational simplicity: Protect Red Hat OpenShift virtual machines (VMs) and containers using the same policy-driven workflows as existing data sources on Cohesity Data Cloud.
- Hypervisor flexibility: Enjoy guaranteed backup and recovery whether you choose a preferred hypervisor or a mixed vendor strategy. We support VMware ESXi, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Nutanix AHV.
- All the Cohesity benefits: Get enhanced cyber resilience, robust data protection, global deduplication across workloads, and faster recovery—now on Red Hat OpenShift workloads.
Our close collaboration with Red Hat aims at supporting customers navigating a rapidly evolving cyber threat landscape.
Enhanced data security for AWS and Microsoft Azure environments
Cohesity has always been at the forefront of cloud data protection. Our latest release includes features that bolster cyber resilience and fulfill compliance requirements for data stored on AWS and Microsoft Azure.
Support of UEFI-preferred boot mode for Amazon EC2 protection: The new 7.2.2 release supports the protection of Amazon EC2 VM instances that have the UEFI-preferred boot mode enabled. (UEFI is a firmware interface standard that’s more advanced, secure, and supports larger disk sizes than the legacy BIOS mode.) Customers are increasingly adopting UEFI as their preferred boot mode and Cohesity is investing to support them along their resilience journey.
Support of CloudArchive (CA) v2 and CloudArchive Direct (CAD) v2 for remote Amazon S3-compatible storage: Cohesity now supports CloudArchive (CA) v2 and CloudArchive Direct (CAD) v2 for remote Amazon S3-compatible storage. This enhancement is designed to improve performance during garbage collection for customers with limited network bandwidth between their Cohesity cluster and remote Amazon S3-compatible archive targets. Administrators are likely to enjoy improved backup and recovery speed and efficiency.
Object lock for primary backup copy on Cohesity Alta DataProtect for AWS and Azure: To improve security posture and fulfill compliance requirements for data stored on Cohesity Alta DataProtect (formerly called Next Gen Cloud Edition or NGCE), the new release uses the object lock feature on AWS and Microsoft Azure to enable stronger default primary backup immutability. This significant enhancement delivers data immutability by default. It prevents customers with admin-level privileges from unilaterally deleting S3 storage used by the Cohesity cluster.
Improved platform security and cyber resilience
The new 7.2.2 release includes some important updates to harden platform security and improve cyber resilience. Remember: cyberattacks will happen. Resilience, the ability of your business to get back up and running, is what counts.
Cluster-level encryption by default: This release enables cluster-level encryption by default for all new clusters created. This improves the data security posture of the whole Cohesity cluster and avoids IT overhead. Previously, administrators had to manually enable cluster-level encryption at the time of cluster creation.
Enhanced metadata encryption: Our newest release improves the encryption of metadata such as titles, descriptions, classifications, indexes, etc., that helps users organize, search, and recover data. This feature brings Cohesity metadata encryption at parity with our backup data encryption methods. This strengthens the platform’s overall security posture—reducing the risk of data breach or exfiltration of your metadata.
Usability and manageability improvements
New and improved unified user experience for upgrades and patching
In the 7.2.2 release, we have completely redesigned the Cohesity Data Cloud software upgrade and patch framework process to provide an enhanced user experience for our customers. Previously, upgrades and patches needed to be done manually using shell scripts, and patch install progress visibility was limited.
With the new redesign, customers can now enjoy a consistent API-driven user experience for upgrades and patching of clusters directly from the Helios UI. This simplifies the whole process and provides real-time tracking of both upgrade and patch progress. It also enables monitoring the status of each node, tracking completion times, and resolving issues arising during the process—providing improved visibility and saving time for the backup admins.
New Helios Self-Managed deployment model
Separately, but concurrently with Cohesity Data Cloud 7.2.2, we are introducing a new control plane option—Helios Self-Managed v1.0.0—deployed on rack appliances in a customer’s data center.
This new deployment model brings Helios SaaS capabilities to on-prem deployments and provides administrators with a unified experience in managing various Cohesity environments. This deployment mode is only meant for large enterprises with multiple petabytes of data, or edge, and disconnected sites with a lack of connectivity to public cloud infrastructure.
Customers with stringent security and compliance needs, or those who must fulfill certain regulatory and data sovereignty requirements, will also want to consider this deployment option.
Customers will now have greater feature parity between SaaS and on-prem deployments. This will enable capabilities such as centralized fleet management, multi-cluster management, anomaly detection, quorum, data insights, etc.
More information is available in our Helios Self-Managed user guide.
Please note: All customers are encouraged to use Helios SaaS for the best user experience and the highest level of security. Helios in self-managed mode is recommended only for dark sites with data compliance requirements or connectivity issues.
